Love, care and affection are essential ingredients for human well-being. They are the emotional bonds that connect us with others and make us feel valued and secure. They also influence our development and relationships throughout our lives, from infancy to adulthood.

The Importance of Love, Care and Affection in Childhood

The first and most important source of love, care and affection for a child is their parents or caregivers. According to attachment theory, a child needs a strong and stable attachment with at least one caregiver who provides them with consistent and responsive care, warmth, and protection1. This helps the child to develop a sense of trust, security, and self-esteem, as well as the ability to regulate their emotions and cope with stress.

A child who receive adequate love, care and affection from their parents or caregivers is more likely to grow up with an optimistic worldview and form healthy relationships with others as they grow older, make friends, and potentially date. They are also more likely to have higher self-esteem, improved academic performance, better parent-child communication, and fewer psychological and behavioural problems.
